Epiphone SG Special Vs G400

Most probably, Epiphone SG Special can be considered as Epiphone’s best effort to provide a very affordable SG guitar to beginners and people who crave the amazing tones of an SG guitar but have limited budget. Previously, we have ever compared Epiphone SG Special against Gibson SG. The product comparison may appear ridiculous, considering that Gibson SG is more like the Harley Davidson of guitar products, but we could see that Epiphone SG Special indeed holds a lot of value in it. This time, we will compare it against Epiphone G400, which is a higher class SG guitar. Let us see whether Epiphone SG Special still holds the best value, or, if Epiphone G400 is actually even better!

Epiphone SG Special Vs G400

Compared to Epiphone SG Special, Epiphone G400 is actually more similar in appearance to Gibson SG. Yes, both Epiphone SG Special and Epiphone G400 comes in a maroon red color, though there are also some color alternatives like worn brown or worn red. The most noticeable distinction is the inlays. Epiphone SG Special still uses the traditional Pearloid dot inlays, which is actually pretty cool. However, Epiphone G400 is packed with block fingerboard inlays that not only boosts the coolness of its appearance, but also adds more comfort to usage. These block inlays will certainly be more pleasant to the touch.

Next, Epiphone SG Special is given two handy control switches, one for master volume and one for master tone. However, Epiphone G400 has more extensive settings. You may have noticed that it has about four switches onboard. For the neck pickup, there are one volume and one tone controls, and for the bridge pickup, there are one volume and one tone controls as well, plus full-size 500kO potentiometers. Rest assured, Epiphone G400 can give a sharper edge in adjusting your plays. Last but not least, you should be aware that Epiphone SG Special and Epiphone G400 are constructed with slightly different materials. Of course, both models have mahogany bodies, but Epiphone SG Special has a hard maple neck while Epiphone G400 has a glued-in mahogany neck.
