In previous articles, we have compared Zoom G5 to Zoom G5n and Boss ME-80. This time, though, we are going to discuss about Zoom G5 and POD HD500. These guitar pedal models often cause confusion among people who are looking for a powerful and reliable guitar pedal. They are both equally famous on the market. Even so, POD HD500 is quite considerably more expensive than Zoom G5. Which model should you choose?
Zoom G5 is a very powerful guitar pedal at a reasonable price. It features a unique Z-Pedal that is different to other similar products. The Z-Pedal does not only move up and down, but also to the sides. As the effect, you will be able to control up to three effect parameters simultaneously! Zoom G5 offers maximum control over your plays. Also, Zoom G5 supports up to 9 simultaneous effects. Besides coming with a smart and sophisticated design, it is also armed with a comprehensive list of built-in features, boasting 22 amp models, 123 effects, and 297 patches. There are tube booster, tap tempo, onboard chromatic tuner, 60-sec looper, and integrated rhythm patterns. It features dual output jacks for connecting with amps as well as XLR output for DI connection to mixers and recorders, also a dedicated headphone output.
POD HD500 also comes with a lot of features to offer, but also a considerable price. It boasts a very rugged metal body that can probably survive a nuclear blast. The manufacturer even said that the bent sheet metal housing is ‘bulletproof’, with heavy-duty metal footswitches and expression pedal. It has 16 HD amp models based on the most sought guitar tones, like california cleans and classic crunch. It claims that the amp models are of very high-quality with excellent realism. There are more than 100 built-in effects, and 512 user-writeable presets. POD HD500 is able to play up to 8 effects simultaneously. Additional features include built-in tuner, signal mute, reverse, 48-second looper, and a free editor/librarian software. It has ¼” and XLR outputs, MIDI I/O, ¼” and XLR ins, and a dedicated headphone output.

All in all, the two models may appear similar in many ways, but we recommend you to choose Zoom G5 in the end. It has much better and easier controls, especially with the Z-Pedal. It also has a better looper and more amp models and effects.
