In previous articles, we have ever compared these microphones to the cult-popular MXL V67G, so make sure that you check those articles as well! Anyhow, today, we are going to compare MXL 770 and MXL 990. Both are also favored by many people because of the affordable and budget-friendly natures of the prices. Well, even so, you may have found out that MXL 770 is actually a little bit cheaper than MXL 990. As both products are being sold with the same accessories – a shock mount and a carrying case, for each – which one should you choose?
Output Quality
Both MXL 770 and MXL 990 are cardioid condenser microphones. They have the same cardioid polar pattern, so they pick up sounds the best from the front side, while supposedly attenuate sounds from the sides and the rear. However, you need to be aware that both MXL 770 and MXL 990 are very sensitive to sounds. They can still pick up some ambient noise, so using them in a treated and controlled environment is the most ideal way. (Read also: Audio Technica AT2020 Vs MXL 990)
Also, they each is actually built upon a 6-micron gold-spluttered low distortion diaphragm. They have the same frequency response range, 30 Hz – 20 kHz. However, you also should know that they pick up sounds quite differently. MXL 990 is typically neutral and flat, with a less-colored audio reproduction. MXL 990 has silky-sweet high-ends with tight and solid lows and mids. At the contrast, MXL 770 breathe some warmth into the sounds. It also delivers extra clarity at the top-end. Also, with the high-pass filter turned on, it can attenuate low frequencies, minimizing noise and emphasizing the midrange more.
Features
As mentioned briefly above, MXL 770 comes with a 6dB/octave @150Hz high-pass filter. The feature is especially beneficial if the user of the mic tends to have harsh breath sounds, as well as for limiting possible noise pick-up. In addition, MXL 770 has a switchable -10dB pre-attenuation pad. MXL 990 does not have those features.
Last but not least, MXL 770 has a higher SPL handling than MXL 990, allowing it to take louder input. The champagne-colored MXL 770 is slightly smaller and lighter than the black MXL 990.
