Are you wondering about which semi-hollow electronic guitar that you should choose? For somebody who has a limited budget, Epiphone models become excellent feasible choices. Indeed, Epiphone guitars are known for their affordability and budget-friendliness. They also have decent performance. For a budget around four hundred bucks or so, Epiphone Wildkat and Epiphone Dot can be some options. While they both are considerably affordable, Epiphone Wildkat is usually being priced a little bit more expensively than Epiphone Dot. Why is that? Design
If you put the two guitars side by side, you can immediately tell a difference in terms of design. Epiphone Wildkat features just a single cutaway body design. While such design already allows for easier access to the fretboard, Epiphone Dot comes with a double cutaway body, which ultimately allows for even more easier and further access to the frets. Howsoever, Epiphone Wildkat is a little bit smaller and slimmer than Epiphone Dot, even though they still weigh quite similarly to each other. Both are lightweight. As the effect, people with smaller physicality may feel more comfortable playing Epiphone Wildkat than with Epiphone Dot.
Both Epiphone Wildkat and Epiphone Dot are well-built. Both of these two models feature Mahogany neck and body and Rosewood fretboard. Their scale length is also identical, 24.75”.
Features and Performance
Both models sound great in each own right. Yet, they indeed sound a little bit differently, as they have different body design and electronics. Now, it depends on whether you want a humbucking pickup sound or the P-90 sound. Epiphone Dot comes with the humbucking pickup sound. It is a very versatile guitar that can fit in a jazz band, on a rock stage, or even at the studio. On the other hand, Epiphone Wildkat is an excellent rock guitar, featuring the P-90 sound, though not as versatile.
Epiphone Dot comes with Alnico Classic open coil humbuckers, featuring onboard volume and tone controls. However, Epiphone Wildkat is indeed more feature packed. It comes with the Locktone Tune-o-matic/StopBar bridge and the extremely cool Bigsby B70 Vibrato Tailpiece.

If you focus on playing in the rock genre, Epiphone Wildkat can be a great choice. It is very feature-packed and has exceptional tonal qualities for this particular purpose. Otherwise, however, you should choose Epiphone Dot, which is more versatile and has the double cutaway design.
