Design
Both Taylor 110e and Martin DX1AE have been designed with the dreadnought body type. So, they are about the same size. They both have a full-size 25.5” scale length and 20 total frets. Even so, these guitars are made from very different materials. Taylor 110e comes with the Taylor Standard II bracing pattern (which is a type of a forward-shifted bracing pattern) and features solid Sitka Spruce top and layered Sapele back and sides. The neck is also Sapele, whereas the fingerboard is of genuine African Ebony wood. The body has a matte finish, and you can see that there is a black pickguard on Taylor 110e. On the other hand, Martin DX1AE features a non-scalloped X-bracing pattern. The guitar boasts to be environmentally friendly because Martin DX1AE comes with an HPL body construction. The only wood on Martin DX1AE is the Spruce top and the Stratabond neck. The rest is HPL, finished with printed-on wood image veneer. There is a faux tortoise pickguard to help protect the wooden surface. On the good side, such construction makes Martin DX1AE very rugged and durable.
Performance
Due to the different design and construction, Taylor 110e and Martin DX1AE have very distinctive tones. Taylor 110e is much brighter. The sound is bright, crisp, and accurate. This guitar projects every note precisely and with decent volume. You can say that Taylor 110e sounds crystal-clear. The integrated pickup system is Taylor’s ES2. On the other hand, Martin DX1AE is significantly warmer. It doesn’t deliver ultra-detailed highs, slightly boosting the bass presence instead. Martin DX1AE comes with the Fishman Sonitone electronics. Both pickup systems are good.
