If you are currently looking for a powerful and reliable guitar combo amp, you can put some VOX models into your consideration. This is because VOX’s products are always built with high quality standards. A lot of people indeed love VOX’s combo amps. For a budget of about a thousand bucks, VOX AC30C2 and VOX AC30C2X are certainly feasible choices. Both are very popular and loved by many. They both are 30-Watt combo amps, which means that they have enough power to deliver thunderous sounds. However, they do have different characteristics and properties. VOX AC30C2X is usually a little bit more expensive, too, than VOX AC30C2. So, which combo amp is best for you?
Design
VOX AC30C2 and VOX AC30C2X have very similar looks. They both share the same vintage design typical of VOX’s combo amps. They each measure by 15.7” x 32.5” x 26.4”. However, these combo amps are also quite considerably heavy. The C2X model is slightly heavier than the C2. This is apparently because of the different speakers implemented inside them. VOX AC30C2 is armed with three 12AX7 tubes, four EL84 tubes, and a pair of 12” Celestion G12M Greenback speakers. On the other hand, VOX AC30C2X also comes with three 12AX7 tubes and four EL84 tubes, but is given dual 12” Celestion Blue AlNiCo speakers.
Both models are 30-Watt combo amps featuring Normal and Top-Boost channels. The master section on each model contains Master Volume and Tone Cut controls. They also have built-in Tremolo and Spring Reverb. There are outputs for extension with external speakers, and both models also support by-passable effect loop.
Performance
Since both are 30-Watt combo amps, VOX AC30C2 and VOX AC30C2X basically have similar output power. They have enough power to fill even bigger rooms. With such power, these combo amps can be very versatile. Nevertheless, we have mentioned above that they have different speakers, and, because of that, they have different output characteristics. VOX AC30C2, with Greenback speakers, have harsher top-end and more prominent lower-mids. As the effect, the tone is something like a ‘warm thunder.’ The highs are sharper and more stinging. However, the sound output can start to break very early even though you haven’t reached the maximum volume level. On the other hand, VOX AC30C2X has Blue speakers, which are generally considered to be of better quality. The headroom is cleaner, and it has wonderful raspy mids that don’t hurt the ears. The highs are softer. It can go even louder without breaking the sound output.

Decision
In general, VOX AC30C2X makes the best choice because of the better speakers. The speakers are more powerful and have a softer, more pleasant tone. However, VOX AC30C2 is also a good model, but mind the harsher top-end.
