Zoom B1on vs. B3: Design
In terms of physical design, if you have seen both Zoom B1on and Zoom B3, you will be able to tell that they are very different from each other. Zoom B1on is the more compact one of the two. It measures by just 154.8 mm deep, 146 mm wide, and 43 mm tall. It has a weight of just 380 grams. It is so compact, lightweight, and portable. You can slip it easily into your bag. Though it may appear to be more delicate than Zoom B3, Zoom B1on is actually very solid and sturdy. The housing is colored in dark gray, whereas the display screen and controls are orange. Nevertheless, it features just one display screen, one control knob, several buttons, and two footswitches.
Zoom B3 is a thud larger. It measures by 170 mm deep, 234 mm wide, and 54 mm tall; it weighs quite significantly more at 1.2 kg. Even so, it is actually still very portable and easy to bring along. The red housing is very sturdy and durable, featuring three display screens with dedicated controls for enhanced control. In addition, it features three dedicated footswitches that you can use for quick access to Patch, Tuner, and Looper.

Zoom B1on vs. B3: Inputs, Outputs, and Connectivity
Zoom B1on and Zoom B3 come with different connectivity options. Therefore, you should consider first what connections that you need prior to choosing.Zoom B1on has a USB port, but it only functions for firmware update and bus power (yes, Zoom B1on can be powered by bus power). It does not have any interface function. So, this model will not be ideal if you need an effects pedal that can connect directly to your PC. However, it features an AUX input (mini stereo 1/8” phone jack), which you can use to jam along to CDs via headphones.
On the other hand, Zoom B3 features a USB port that has interface functions (it cannot be bus powered). It is great if you need a device that can connect directly to your PC. Unfortunately, it lacks the AUX input. A way around to jam along to CDs would require you to connect the device to your laptop and set it as the laptop’s audio output. This way, you can listen to whatever playing on the laptop through the device.
They also have different outputs. Zoom B1on comes with a standard stereio 1/4″ phone jack for output. Zoom B3 provides multiple output options, featuring a balanced XLR connector and standard stereo 1/4″ phone jacks for L and R channels.
Zoom B1on vs. B3: Effects
There is a notable difference regarding simultaneous effects. Zoom B3 is only able to handle up to 3 effects chained up together simultaneously. If you need more, Zoom B1on can offer you that. It is able to handle up to 5 effects simultaneously.
You can say that the two models come with good quality effects. Most of them are great, particularly the specialized effects and models. Though, Zoom B3 is coming with a slightly larger library with 99 effects and 12 amp/cabinet models. On the other hand, Zoom B1only has 75 effects. The effects on the two models have comparable quality.
In addition, Zoom B3 comes with 100 memory locations, 50 of which are used for factory presets. The included patches are cool and very usable. There are 41 built-in rhythm patterns and a 40-second looper. Zoom B1on also has 100 memory locations, but without the included patches. Nevertheless, there are 68 built-in rhythm patterns and a 30-second looper.
Zoom B1on vs. B3: Powering Options
Some people may need to consider the powering options as well, depending on how you want to use your bass effects pedal. One of the advantages of Zoom B1on is its highly flexible powering options. It can run on four AA batteries, though the batteries may get depleted within a day or so. However, it can also be powered via the USB port, which is very convenient. There is an optional AC adapter available for powering using a power outlet. Zoom B3, on the other hand, can run on four AA batteries for at least six hours, also with an optional AC adapter for powering using a power outlet.

You may want to choose Zoom B1on if you need a simple, compact effects pedal that can be powered by USB, and if you really prefer the AUX input instead of USB interface functions. The ability to handle 5 simultaneous effects is also a notable consideration.
